The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US against five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
