Elden Ring's Rolling Dodge Merits Recognition

For those who have experienced this acclaimed title, or nearly any action-adventure title, you're likely well-versed in the glorious mechanic referred to as the “evasion roll.” This defensive move enables your hero to carry out a front, lateral, or rearward somersault to avoid all incoming damage and gain space from foes. Appears practical, wouldn't you say?

The dodge roll, however, has received a lot of flak, not simply due to the tumbling; it's been labeled dumb, a easy way out, and an unrealistic move — and sometimes, I agree. Picture me somersaulting past local Doppler gangs in another popular RPG — they can't hit me! But this game's dodge roll represents the evasion to outdo all previous dodge rolls, and let me explain.

In Elden Ring's case, the creators discovered a great way to counter all sentiments that the move is not challenging enough: simply give every enemy unreasonable strength, increase it further, and all heroes who ventures close them will be eternally grateful thanks to their rolling skill, I'm no exception. When the stakes are this high, successfully rolling to victory seems like an accomplishment, instead of an unfair advantage.

No other evasion method in this RPG comes close to this level of gratification and consistency, since rapid sprints offer limited distance and blocking attempts are readily overcome by strong enemies. One player advised hopping as the main Elden Ring avoidance strategy, but in addition to lacking optimal placement, It wasn't clear to me taking a crushing hit might boost my prospects of defeating bosses (skill issue, perhaps).

Mastering the Technique

But even though the dodge roll grants reprieve in a famously difficult title, it isn't without skill. Firstly, this title's evasion move merely initiates a frame of protection after you let go of the roll control, which prevents a rapid, fearful withdrawal from dire situations. Moreover, while it might carry you off from foes, it's far more effective to use it as an opportunity to get closer, optimally at their back, and land some hits. And, finally, you must still grasp and foresee foe assaults, since evading too early of a long charging animation could conclude your immunity prior to the hit connecting… which will seriously hurt.

A Harmonious System

Although evasion-rolling in quick succession may look a bit ridiculous (kudos to the Witcher anew), this isn't really an option in the game. Of course, that doesn't render it a believable combat move — which is precisely why it would be dreadful to experience it in a product like a realism-focused RPG — however, this is a flashy fantasy title we're talking about, therefore, it doesn't matter?

Similar to any respectable dodge roll, this title's dodge motion is enhanced with a little somersault-y hop at the start, giving it an energetic feel rather than dropping the character onto the ground. Depending on your gear, the maneuver might appear super agile or somewhat sluggish, but it remains quicker and smoother than the rolling dodges used in Dark Souls. Admittedly, you could plant your oversized sword in the dirt while equipped with it, but that's your responsibility for not just playing a crossbow (I'm joking — avoid using the game with a crossbow).

Optimal Harmony

This title's dodging mechanic forms an optimal harmony between challenge and opportunity, granting chances of triumph while endangering that very prospect at the smallest error. Perfect this move, and you'll be rewarded with not just victory, but fulfillment.
