Christantus Uche Ignites Dominant Crystal Palace Triumph at Shelbourne.
Even though entering their first-ever European campaign, Crystal Palace are learning at a rapid pace. Missing key players like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and wing-back Daniel Muñoz, the London club left Dublin with a comfortable result that virtually secures them a spot in the Europa Conference League qualifying rounds.
A further victory in their next fixture against Finland's KuPS should be sufficient to secure straight entry to the last 16, particularly following a prior stumble against Strasbourg.
Fringe Players Grasp the Opportunity
This match offered a platform for some of Palace's lesser-used players to impress. Christantus Uche, making only his second start after arriving on loan from Getafe, opened the scoring with a well-taken goal. Striker Eddie Nketiah contributed a second, scoring for the second consecutive match.
A Shelbourne team that had concluded their league season proved outmatched even for a largely rotated Palace lineup. The visitors were further depleted by the reports that Mateta and Muñoz are sidelined with leg injuries.
Dominance Asserted from the Start
Despite torrential rain in Dublin, Palace rapidly established dominance. A flowing passing sequence in the 11th minute, sparked by Daichi Kamada's incisive pass, allowed Nketiah to set up Uche for a simple finish.
Midfielder Adam Wharton came close soon after, driving a long-range effort over the bar. Nketiah subsequently appealed for a penalty after bursting into the area, but the referee waved away the protests.
Ex-Arsenal man didn't need to wait long to get his goal, tapping home from a yard out after Uche's shot had struck the post.
The home side were clinging on for dear life. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was fortunate to escape a booking for a couple of robust tackles on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards rattled the crossbar with a powerful header from a corner.
Pino Seals the Game
The contest was as good as over eight minutes from half-time. Yeremy Pino weaved past some comically weak challenges before calmly dispatching a shot past goalkeeper Wessel Speel to extend the lead to 3-0.
Following the break, coach Oliver Glasner took the chance to rest several individuals like Kamada and Wharton. Substitute Romain Esse came close to scoring with his very first touch, but saw his effort blocked.
Esse was incredibly unlucky later on, seeing one shot crash off both posts before being clasped on the line. Uche also blazed a sitter of a chance, showing there is still room for improvement in his game.
A solitary concern for Palace was a late knock to Justin Devenny, who was forced off. This paved the way for 17-year-old forward Benji Casey to make his first-team debut, capping an otherwise positive evening for the visiting side.
